Pavlov started to notice that the dogs would sometimes be salivating even without the stimulus of food. He eventually determined that this was because of the lab coats that the scientists were wearing. Whenever each dog was fed, the person giving them the food would be wearing a lab coat. Because of this, the dogs would start to salivate whenever they saw a lab coat by associating the coat with their food. Pavlov then took the experimentation a little further by striking a bell whenever food was delivered to the dogs. Over time, the dogs started to associate the sound of a bell with their food and would start to salivate any time they heard it.
